P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon

The P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will take place on Sunday, January 15, 2012. We are contacting you in advance to share important information about the race.

The race routes have changed for both the full and half marathon. The marathon course starts in downtown Phoenix at CityScape, passes through Phoenix and Scottsdale, and finishes in Tempe on the Arizona State University (ASU) campus. The half marathon course starts in downtown Tempe, completes a tour of Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale, and finishes near ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium. Please review the course map and road closure/reopening times for more detailed information.

Road closures associated with the race may affect access to your home or business on race day. To help us manage communication with you, please visit our website and complete our “community contact form.” You can remove your name from our mailing list, add or change contact information with one simple form.

Please review the enclosed road closure information and contact us as soon as possible, if you have questions, as our community relations staff are more readily able to assist community members prior to race week, when our team travels to Arizona to prepare for race weekend.

The Clarendon Hotel Halloween Bash 2011‏

You're Invited to Ben's 20th Annual Halloween Bash - yes you heard that right, 20th! I originally started this party out of my house on the campus of the University of Arizona, and ever since people always tell me they're looking forward to the next party. In 2004 I had 375 people at my house so it was finally time to move to a bigger space - The Clarendon Hotel of course! The party will start at 8pm with a Luminarias ceremony held by the Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The Clarendon Catwalk will be open for practice runs beginning at 6pm. To compete in the costume contest, please register with the judges by 9pm.

Throughout the night, guests are invited to write the name of a loved one that they would like to remember on a paper bag. The bag is turned into a luminaria (either with tealights or glowsticks). at midnight, just before the costume contest, the bags are gathered and the names are read off aloud then burned to release the good wishes and fond memories into the world.

Fabulous Phoenix Fourth Celebration

The Freedom Wireless Fabulous Phoenix Fourth will be the highlight of Independence Day in Phoenix. Thank you to our title sponsor, Freedom Wireless Foundation. This free 4th of July event will feature the biggest fireworks display in the event’s 26-year history!

Festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. July 4 at Steele Indian School Park, Third Street and Indian School Road. The fireworks display will begin around 9:30 p.m. The event also includes a classic car exhibit, kids’ inflatable rides, and food and beverage vendors.

Register for Youth Summer Programs‏‏

Registration opened Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. for our full schedule of summer programs. You can choose from full-day supervised recreation programs at 12 locations this summer that will keep your kids active, engaged and safe over the break. Or you can choose from a full schedule of general-interest classes and programs from ballet to karate to sports clinics. You can view our full schedule right now and then register online starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. You also can register in person at any department community center.

Exact prices, dates, times and other details in the full-day recreation programs vary from center to center, however most are for kids ages 6 up to 12 and run from early June through July. Prices range from $280 to $350 for the seven-to-eight weeks. Some centers offer shorter duration program options at a reduced price. Many centers also are offering programs for teens. General interest classes are available in a variety of lengths, prices and schedules throughout the summer.

Does Your Child Like to Sing

The Phoenix Children’s Chorus, a program hosted and supported by the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, will be holding auditions for boys and girls currently in 1st through 11th grades for their 2011 season. No prior choral training is required – applicants need only possess a clear and pleasant singing voice and the desire to learn. This is the choruses 25th Anniversary year.

Auditions will take place from May 13 through June 7 by appointment. Auditions will be held at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. 3rd St. in central Phoenix.

The choir has over 300 children in two training choirs and two touring choirs. The culturally diverse chorus offers young people a comprehensive choral music education with performance opportunities in a positive learning environment. This chorus has performed throughout Europe, Russia, Canada & China and has taken top honors at the World Choral Olympics.
